Green Juicing: Take Your Nutrition to the Next Level

.Whether we are in recovery from addiction or just looking for a new healthier lifestyle, nutrition plays an important role. I’ve recently started drinking a green smoothie everyday, and green juicing is the next step.

I’m happy to introduce Farnoosh Brock who shares her tips on the value of green juicing.

Why did you start juicing and how has it made a difference in your life?

One summer morning at 5am, I was watching an infomercial by the wonderful Jack Lalanne, America’s late fitness hero. I was intrigued beyond control. I am in love with fruits and vegetables anyway. It was a natural next step to explore them in a completely different state, beyond cooked, baked or salad state, in the form of juice!

That was my initial start into green juicing. I started it because I was in a very unhappy place physically and emotionally. In addition, I needed to make a drastic change in my health and habits.

I soon found out how delicious, refreshing, and beneficial green juicing is. It soon became an indispensable part of my life. I have always been a health nut and tried lots of other paths to health. Vegan diet, raw food challenges, vegetarian diet, and green smoothies are foods I enjoy a great deal. There is something remarkably healing and miraculous about green juicing. This is the main foundation of my health and vitality. I have never felt better than when I juice regularly.

As to the difference it has made, I shed about 15-20 extra pounds that I could simply not get rid of with other methods. In addition, the most notable difference is in my digestive system. I feel that it has become even more efficient than in my 20s. As I get older, the more I juice, the more robust my system feels.

This is an incredibly crucial part of our health. Our digestive system helps us absorb nutrients as well as lets our body get rid of waste. If our body does not do these functions efficiently, you feel less healthy. Sickness and disease can set in. Juicing has been an incredibly amazing way to keep the inside of my body as clean as the outside.

Beyond that, juicing gives me tons lots of energy. It stabilizes my sugar cravings. Furthermore, it gives me glowing skin. It has healed my bad eating habits by gently moving me toward healthier foods.

What inspired you to write The Healthy Juicer’s Bible?

As you may know, this is my second juicing book. I wrote Your Comprehensive Guide to Green Juicing in December 2011 because my juicing community was growing.  I could not find a great reference book that addressed the issues that I really wanted to share with my community. Even so, it was a beginner guide and focused solely on green juicing.

When this traditional publisher approached us about a general juice book, I was excited again. I have learned so much in the year since I wrote the first book, especially with running my virtual juicing clinic, that I wanted to share the new and expanded knowledge. Not to mention that I had countless requests for a real print book.

But the singular reason that pushed me to write this book was that my publishers would be able to put my message of juicing into the hands of more people than I could on my own. Furthermore, my ultimate mission, as I wrote on the first page of the book, is to get you to juice! That’s why I wrote The Healthy Juicer’s Bible.

What are the health benefits when you green juice regularly?

I am amazed at how delicious the green juices can be so first and foremost, green juices make you happy. You are doing something great for yourself. In addition, it tastes wonderful.

It is the zen habit that starts other habits, I like to say. Juicing gently pushes out your bad habits and moves you toward healthier choices in your eating. For example, you don’t tell yourself that you are now forbidding yourself from eating a piece of chocolate cake. Rather, with juicing regularly, you lose the taste and desire slowly. That’s a powerful way to heal your body and infuse more zen habits into your system.

As for the most appealing benefits, the way your body feels after drinking juices is a balanced, hydrated, and a satisfied state. As I mentioned, you will get rid of waste more efficiently. Furthermore, you will come back into balance through detoxing and cleansing your body. You are doing this in the most natural way, through the juices of raw fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

How could juicing help people in recovery who are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

Juicing has an amazing effect as a healing gateway. From the participants of my juicing clinic, I have heard amazing stories, and disclaimer that I am neither a doctor nor a nutritionist, I just know that juicing can help those who have an ailment.

In one case, juicing helped heal a stomach ulcer and in another, it has been helping someone deal better with chemotherapy. Yes, results may vary and yes it may just be that juicing is making you feel better about yourself and that overall feeling of wellness is generating these additional results but I am just amazed by all the healing stories around juicing.

You can expect to feel better, eliminate fatigue, have more energy, and feel empowered that you are taking care of yourself. You can also see results in being able to focus better on your work, think more clearly and even be more productive. Plus, have a lot of fun because you can make new fresh recipes all the time and be on a path of discovery and experimentation with juicing for as long as you like. I am still dishing up new recipes and trying new vegetables six years later.

The best healing with juicing comes when you do a juice fast. This is when you are consuming just juices for a period of time and letting your digestive system rest from eating and letting your body refresh and reboot itself. This is the best way to get more intense healing benefits from juicing.

What suggestions do you have for someone who is interested in starting green juicing?

My first suggestion is to be committed for 2-3 weeks and you will see results. Check out a resource, such as The Healthy Juicer’s Bible or other books, to help you get started and to give you the basics on how to create your green juices, and note that you are going to need a juicer. Blenders or food processors will not work.

You need to get a juicer and you can do so these days for as little as $50. Start with a simple juicer so you can have a machine that gets you started. Then you need to make your first green juice. I would say go easy on the green ingredients and start a more fruit based juice – I have about 50 recipes in different levels of beginner to advanced in my book so check those out – and also start with small doses, maybe one cup or two at first, and then you build up.

I want to encourage you to also believe in the healing powers of juicing. If you go into juicing with a open and positive mindset, you will get so much more out of the whole experiment.

Happy juicing and let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome Farnoosh to Cathy’s blog! It’s nice to see you here. 🙂

Ah…I’ve read so much about the wonderful green juicing tips and ways at your blog, and each time I get motivated to start but never really get down to it on a regular basis. 🙂

I agree, green juicing has only got advantages and is known to cure many ailments that we might face, besides curing the ones we have. Not to mention the overall glowing skin (which you have!) and the feel good factor that comes along with it.

I have tried the juice fasts, though just for 1-2 days, and they work wonders for your digestive systems and I would also recommend them them to anyone.

Thanks for sharing this with us, and reminding me to get started with it too. Have a nice week ahead both of you 🙂

Hope you give it a try Harleena. Once you get a few recipes down, you will find that it is quite a nice experience. I haven’t tried the juice fasts, but that sounds like an option to check out as well. I usually drink mine at lunch time and that has worked for me. Have a great week too!!

Farnoosh – I just got into fruit juicing last year and loved it. Not so sure about green juicing b/c wasn’t sure of the taste or the health benefits but after your strong endorsement of green juicing (and your book) I have no choice to give it a try! And of course start with some of the beginner ‘fruit-based’ recipes.

I wondered about the taste as well, Vishnu. I add an apple, sometimes a banana and it is really quite tasty. This is a good way to get those extra vegetables and fruits that we all need to have.

Lovely interview. The book is totally delightful, Farnoosh. The added bonus is the gorgeous photography – which is a major motivation in itself.

Juicing is yummy! and I love it – green, fruit and combination!

Hugs to you, Farnoosh and you, Cathy!

I think you would like it Lisa. It feels like such a healthy beverage to be putting in our bodies. It helps with energy and an overall better feeling. I recently started and I’m hooked.

      Hi Debra,

I just started green juicing and I’ve noticed it gives me a boost of energy and also quenches my hunger. It helps me the urge to snack. I really love it, so hope you give it a try.

      Hi Debbie,

I think you might like it. I wasn’t sure either and I thought it was strange to drink something that was green, but you can tweak the ingredients to make it taste good and it does feel healthy. Let me know if you give it a try. Take care.

    Hey Cathy,

Your blog looks nice. Nothing much to say about green juice 😀 I like only natural tangerine juice.

Best regards from I. C. Daniel – Romania
