21 Happiness Quotes to Make Your Day

In my last post, How to Find Happiness Again,  I talked about the importance of living one day at a time. When you let go of regrets and stop worrying about the future, your life can improve.

If you are concerned about your child and their substance use, you’ve most likely put your well being on a shelf for another day when you are feeling better.

Don’t wait for later. Joy can be yours today. Let go of your fear and get your life back one day at a time. Live your life to the fullest now.

I love quotes. Today I wanted to share twenty-one inspiring quotes about happiness. The following quotes will help remind you that your life is worth living to the fullest.

1. “The belief that unhappiness is selfless and happiness is selfish is misguided. It’s more selfless to act happy. It takes energy, generosity, and discipline to be unfailingly lighthearted, yet everyone takes the happy person for granted. No one is careful of his feelings or tries to keep his spirits high. He seems self-sufficient; he becomes a cushion for others. And because happiness seems unforced, that person usually gets no credit.”  ~ Gretchen Rubin

2. “If you think sunshine brings you happiness, then you haven’t danced in the rain.” ~ unknown

3. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”  ~ Mahatma Gandhi

5. “Count your rainbows, not your thunderstorms.” ~ Alyssa Knight

6. “Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.” ~ Groucho Marx

7 “Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.” ~ Robert Green Ingersoll

8. “It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

10. “Nobody else is in charge of your happiness except you.” ~ Joyce Meyer

11.  “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” ~ Oscar Wilde

12. “Don’t be afraid to take an unfamiliar path. Sometimes they’re the ones that take you to the best places. ~ Unknown

13. “I know now that happiness “resides within” and that often our “problems” can be solved by simply changing how we think about them.” ~ Sonja Lyubomirsky

  1. Wow Cathy, lots of quotes on this list I hadn’t seen before. So many inspiring words and thoughts. I think I’ll be printing this for future reference!

    1. I agree Cathy has mentioned a lot of happiness quotes and all of these are well written. They are a source of inspiration when you are turned off.

  2. Cathy-

My eyes lit up as I saw the title of your post – you know that I too love quotes.
    My favorite?
“If you think sunshine brings you happiness, then you haven’t danced in the rain.”
I remember as a kid in Dallas when we had thunderstorms and hail ~ we were beyond joyful running out into it and playing. 🙂 Fran

  3. the last quote is my favorite, Cathy. Happiness comes from us and from within. No one and nothing outside can make us happy. thanks for sharing the other happiness quotes as well.

  4. Wonderful collection Cathy!

I am another on who loves quotes, and had to cut them out from my posts most of the time because they would simply add to the length! These are such a nice collection, and I might just be borrowing a few from here when I write anything about happiness. 🙂

Thanks for sharing them with us. 🙂

  5. Cathy,
Thanks for writing these quotes! I just love reading quotes and always feel so inspired by them! The Epicteus quote about ceasing to worry is one of my favorites, #16

    1. Welcome Ute! So glad that you are here. Feel free to look around the site, and be sure to contact me if there is anything I can help you with. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

  6. Happiness, for me, results from being in an environment where I feel like I can say what’s actually going on for me in that moment. The thing is that I have the power to convert any interaction I’m in into that kind of environment, because ultimately I’m the only one who can give myself that feeling of safety to express that I’m craving.

    1. That is so true, Chris. I as well need to feel safe to talk openly to feel happy. That is so important, and it is up to us to either create or put ourselves in that kind of environment. Happiness does come from the inside out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Hi Cathy!

I know I’m late to the party, but loved reading these quotes.

I loved this one: “Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory” ~Albert Schweitzer

Good health does remove so much in the way of physical obstacles to happiness. But it’s the second part I like the most. Too many people hold on to grudges, to offenses, to stress and disappointments, frustrations, anger and and other poisons. To be able to let such things go is so crucial to happiness.

    Thanks for sharing these, Cathy!

    1. Hi Ken,

Welcome! Absolutely, when we let things go, we really see the big picture and don’t get caught up in the negativity. It is really the best place to be. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I love the one about kids being happy because they don’t have a worry mechanism – it’s true. Happiness is found in a child like spirit – that is why I love kids and don’t mind being thought of us a big kid – that’s a compliment. No greater medicine than spending time with a child and hearing them laugh, and questioning life.

    1. Hi Shelley,

Welcome! We do learn a lot from watching kids be happy and not be saddled with adult concerns. It is wonderful to have that kid-like adventurous spirit which can be so contagious. If we could all live our lives with less worry and more happiness, that would be a wonderful thing. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

  9. I feel happy when I am around kids. I really like spending time with them. Other than that, I feel happy when I am playing guitar. For me guitar is like meditation getting me into the state of flow making me forget the whole world.

I also like travelling and reading and watching movies.

And yes, I am a quote sucker. I have them printed on my office wall, my bedroom, my table and everywhere.

My favorite one in this list is #19 about children and my all time favorite quote is “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

    Have a wonderful Life Cathy,

    Manish Kapoor
