How Recovery Coaching Can Help You – The Parent

Inner freedom is not guided by our efforts; it comes from seeing what is true. ~ The Buddha

Are you struggling with your child’s substance use?

Do you feel confused about how to move forward?

Consider learning more about parent coaching.

Working with a coach is a way to gain support if you are a parent of a child struggling with substance use.

When you reach out for support for yourself, you ultimately help your child.

There is a unique feeling of helplessness when your child is off track and using substances. Substance use can rob you of the pleasure in everyday living. It can throw you into a turmoil of constant fear for your child’s safety.

You feel alone and full of shame.

When we watch someone who we brought into this world make poor choices, it is emotionally devastating. This kind of constant stress is damaging to your health.

You can often feel stuck with your feelings of despair. Life becomes focused on your child and their journey.

If your child does decide to seek recovery and enter a treatment program, the focus of the attention is on your child. This is important, of course, because they are at a critical time and need the help of professionals.

That being said, as the parent you may often be left alone to sort out your feelings and put your life back together. Your goals are often pushed to the side. You may still be dealing with your fear, feelings of frustration, shame, and anger.

Having a child that abuses substances and becomes dependent or addicted can send you down a path you never expected.

There are several support options available to parents who are struggling with their child’s substance use.

You may think that Recovery Coaching is just for the person with addiction issues to help them get their life back together. However, Recovery Coaching can also be for the parent, who has endured the emotional exhaustion of dealing with the substance use.

Your focus recently has been on your child and their issues. You may have put your goals and dreams on the back burner for another day.

While substance use may have put your life in turmoil, Recovery Coaching is a powerful tool for you to find your way back. You will gain clarity as you discover and articulate your goals and desires.

It is possible to have the life you deserve.

What is Parent Recovery Coaching?

Recovery Coaching is NOT counseling, therapy, or a form of advice giving. Recovery Coaching does not dwell in the past, rather it leads you to your future so that you can fulfill your goals. It does not endorse any specific method of recovery, nor does it act as a support group sponsor.

Recovery coaching IS a support system to help you better cope with the after effects of your children’s substance use and to support you as you make decisions.

My goal is to motivate, inspire and keep you gently accountable during the process.  I will help you build a strong foundation and have more clarity about your situation.

While Recovery Coaching is for the person who is seeking recovery, it can also be for parents or other family members of the person who are suffering.

You deserve health and wellness in your life. In addition you deserve an amazing and meaningful life filled with joy.

Do you want to feel that joy and inner peace is within your grasp?

As a Parent Recovery Coach, I work with family members, mainly parents whose life has become very stressful, because of their children’s substance use.

    You will leave with:

  • ideas to help move your life forward in a positive direction
  • a deeper awareness of your personal situation which leads to action from a place of understanding
  • support as you process and discover your own solutions
  • more clarity about your personal situation and how you can help yourself
  • feeling more empowered, because only you can make the best choices for yourself

How will you feel in 5-years if you don’t make the changes you need to make?

  1. Cathy – you will be a fantastic Recovery Coach with your experiences and years spent learning, understanding and unraveling all things addiction. Parents will be fortunate to take advantage of your services. Having the sort of help you are offering will be invaluable to helping them manage their own lives as well as next steps with what to do about their child’s addiction or substance abuse problem.

  2. I agree with Lisa – you will be a wonderful Recovery Coach Cathy with all the awesome knowledge you possess!

You are so very right that such type of a treatment and coaching is something that even parents need, beside the child because they undergo a lot of pain, hurt, and trauma too. And you would best know it having undergone it all yourself.

I find myself lucky that I haven’t had such any issues of drugs or other kind of abuse in my family, nor within anyone I know closely. Perhaps because our end the families are more close knit and we are with our teens right till the time they grow up to be on their own, which isn’t the case in most other countries. Yes, there are a few exceptional cases, though rare.

    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. Hi Harleena,

That is great that your family is close knit. We have, for whatever reason, lost some of that here in the states. Hopefully we will revert back to how calmer days soon. Thanks for the support. Take care.

    1. Hi David,

Thank for the support. I’ll have to talk “coaching” with you one of these days in the near future. Take care.

How wonderful Cathy. You are such a bright light in the world. I’ve never heard of a Recovery Coach before, but from the perspective of a ex-coach, I think it’s a brilliant idea.

    Love Elle
    xoxo

    1. Hi Elle,

Thanks so your support. A recovery coach is fairly new, so many may not have heard of it. My even more narrow niche is working with parents. I do feel there is a great need out there to help parents that have been affected by this disease.

  4. I am so glad you have taken up this work and turned a difficulty into a healing gift for your community. As one who had a marriage destroyed by substance abuse I can thoroughly sympathize with your clients and appreciate the need for your services.

  5. What beautiful work you are doing. It’s true that so much focus is on the one who is ill even though the parents may be in so much pain and overwhelmed. Thank you for the explanation of recovery coaching.

    1. Hi Ruth,

Yes, often the family members are left on the own, once the addicted person seeks recovery. It can be very lonely and frustrating. Reaching out for help in whatever form can be helpful. Take care.

  7. Having a child become an addict can be devastating. Alanon is very helpful for parents if they will work the program. Parents don’t realize, they have become “sick” too and need healing. Good luck with your coaching program. You will help many . . .

    1. HI Martha,

Al-anon is a very helpful program. It has helped me and many others. Coaching can be in addition to or an alternative to al-anon or other support groups. Thanks for stopping by!
