Step Into the Solution: Meet Dr. Robb Kelly

As a parent, it is helpful to have ideas so you can “step into the solution” and help your son or daughter change.

Dr. Robb Kelly has had his own struggle with alcohol. He knows what it’s like to feel helpless. Drinking can lead to losing your family and becoming homeless. For a time, Dr. Kelly lived on the streets in Manchester in the UK.  Finally, he realized he couldn’t stop drinking, was ready to change, and, with help, started on the road to recovery.

He now uses his experience and professional training to help others find their way through the challenges of addiction and trauma.

Watch my interview with Dr. Kelly here:

While addiction can affect anyone, I wanted to know Dr. Kelly’s thoughts on the prevalence of addiction in musically inclined people because so many parents that I’ve talked to have musical sons. Dr. Kelly is a musician himself and has played with some well-known musicians. He points out reasons why people in the music industry are more prone to substance use. Musicians and artists seem to suffer a little bit more than other people.

We also talked about the idea of letting go vs. staying close to struggling family members. Dr. Kelly explained that when a person struggling with alcohol or other drugs, the alcoholic has family members who are involved, the recovery rate goes up. At the same time, he explains that if there is mayhem or violence in the house, the user may need to live elsewhere. But continued dialogue around the issue can help, and it is essential to have someone you can call to talk and stay in touch.

Dr. Kelly also covers harm reduction and states that everyone has childhood trauma. We need to identify the trauma for each person because childhood experiences affect people in different ways. He feels that trauma is the gateway drug to substance use.
